A Day in the Life by K. Sparks produced by G.C., with features from Sean Price, Julius Francis, Cymarshall Law, Dave Barz, and Chris Young, has dropped and is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon.com, and other major outlets. To get a taste of the album, download the free sampler of A Day in the Life here. A Day in the Life is a fitting title for this conceptual project, which was recorded in just one day’s time. Listeners are taken from the beginning to end of a typical day in Sparks’ life. The album is an exploration into all aspects of the artist’s identity, a reveal he faces in an intimate and emotionally supercharged way. Sparks provides the A Day in the Life tour using inventive wordplay, internal rhyming, battle raps, storytelling and eye-widening punch-lines. Equally integral to the project, producer G.C. has master-crafted a backdrop for Sparks that glows with rich instrumentation and a comforting jazziness, while still maintaining a raw, boom-bap vibe overall.
Standout tracks include “Keep Movin,” with its New York-drenched drum/bass/guitar trifecta, a smooth chorus from Julius Francis and monstrous verses from both Sparks and the infamous Sean P [download this track here]. “Watching Me” includes a harmonious chorus by Julius Francis, and the head-turning lyrics of rapper Chris Young. Meanwhile, Sparks unloads battle rhymes full of potent patterns and an entire verse of food-related metaphors. The chemistry between Sparks and G.C. shines on the final track, “Let Me Fly.” Sparks rides G.C.’s soulful, ambient beat as he unravels the myths and misconceptions of his rise to greatness.

Born in Kenya, of Rwandan parents, Shad was raised in London, Ontario. His mother worked in London as a hospital lab technician; his father, as a machinist. He attended London Central Secondary School. His debut album When This Is Over (2005) was self-made, financed with the $17,500 he won from 91.5 The Beat’s Rhythm of the Future talent competition during his time as an undergraduate student at Wilfrid Laurier University. The album is recognized for lyrics deprecating the typical rap scene and focusing on social causes—for example, the track “I’ll Never Understand” examines the Rwandan genocide and includes poetry written by his mother, Bernadette Kabango. In 2007, he was signed by Black Box Recordings and released his second album, The Old Prince. In 2008, The Old Prince received a Juno Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, and was nominated for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. Music critics have compared his style to that of K-os and of Common, and also to a “London (England) sound circa 1990. Shad is bilingual, speaking English and French. He holds a business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is studying part-time towards a master’s degree in liberal studies at Simon Fraser University.

If a year’s worth of weekly, original, straight-to-the-net songs for his online series “Manic Mondays” wasn’t enough to thrust K. Sparks into the foreground, his musical resume of over 100 mixtape features, six albums, a few promotional CD’s, and download counts for various projects into the 30k’s has surely done just that. A Day in the Life is a fitting title for this conceptual K. Sparks album; he even completed the entire project in one day, sticking to the theme. The South Jamaica Queens artist leads listeners from the beginning to end of a typical day in his life. A Day in the Life proves that there is still space for music that explores all aspects of an artist’s identity in an intimate and emotionally supercharged way. Inventive wordplay, internal rhyming, battle raps, storytelling and eye-widening punch-lines are all signs of greatness and with this album, K. Sparks inducts himself into that hall of fame. Equally integral to the project, producer G.C. has master-crafted a backdrop for Sparks that glows with rich instrumentation, moments of jazziness and an overall vibe that comforts like the warm crackle of used vinyl.

Standout tracks include “Keep Movin,” with its New York-drenched drum/bass/guitar trifecta, a smooth chorus from Julius Francis and monstrous verses from both Sparks and the infamous Sean P. A gem entitled “Watching Me” is enhanced by a harmonious chorus by Julius Francis, and the head-turning lyrics of rapper Chris Young. Hearing an emcee spill his soul like this is a rare and beautiful thing indeed. Available on iTunes, Amazon.com and all digital retailers March 2, 2010 on HiPNOTT Records.

I watch a lot of Golden Girls episodes while I work out (don’t hate – it’s funny and keeps my mind off the fact that I’m sweating). I take breaks during the commercials and lately I’ve been seeing previews for the upcoming season of Bridezillas. For those who are (luckily) blissfully unaware of the show, it’s basically a show for depicting demanding brides-to-be in various states of distress. One bride fussed over not being able to have chocolate cake at her wedding and decided to smash a cake in the bakery to prove her point. Another bride berated her bridesmaids for looking too pretty. Another pouted as her mom declined to buy her a $14,000 wedding dress and instead said she would pay for an $8,000 one.

Which got me to thinking. If these people are this incapable of dealing with the small blips that come up while planning a wedding, what makes them think they will be successful in marriage?

While I know your wedding is a big day and you’re looking forward to professing your love in front of God and those you care about, but in reality, the wedding –gasp! – is not that important.

Yes, you make vows to one another. You exchange rings. You have your first kiss as man and wife. You dance to “your song.” You cut the cake and toss the bouquet. Fun times.

But if you don’t understand that this is only the beginning, that you will have a lifetime of ups and downs with this person, that you have to mean what you say when you utter the “for better or worse, for richer or poorer…” part of the vows, then your marriage is off to a crappy start. Weddings aren’t about the ceremony – it’s about the commitment.

This week on Project Runway, the designers were given an assignment where they could share what is on their heart – and put that into a heart-themed design.
The remaining designers seemed philosophical about Ping’s elimination, though Jesse seemed as though he’s still carrying a grudge for the onus of having had to work with her. He and Jesus both vowed they were going to show the judges they could design with the best of them. I knew when I heard that; one of them was sure to be doomed. Having a challenge that related so appropriately to Valentine’s Day was heartwarming, and heart-stirring. The designers took the challenge as seriously as it should have been taken; everyone seemed intent on expressing their respect to the amateur models and what they represented.

It was a bit disconcerting to see these “real” ladies take on their first modeling assignment, and to see them enjoying themselves, as they walked down the runway. Their walks showed a variety of expertise; some (like Seth Aaron’s model) just wanted to show their personalities. It was good to see some of them blithely accept the challenge of designing “outside their comfort zones” and make outfits for ladies whose figures were not typical of models. I was a bit stunned when Anthony referred to his model as “full figured”. How would he have labeled Seth Aaron’s model? Both were lovely ladies and, although both men were easily able to adjust their designs, it reminded the viewer of how many designers would view a woman who isn’t a size 2 or 4.

It was interesting to see so many shades of red – from the dark scarlet waves of Jonathan’s dress to the bright but soft watermelon pleats of Emilio’s dress. It was also interesting to see some of them use boldness; and include accents that weren’t the typical white – like Ben and Maya. I also enjoyed seeing many different ways of displaying the Campbell’s branding – from Amy’s subtle print accents to Jesse’s afterthought rosette.

Once again, the more telegenic designers dominated the asides and confessionals shown to the viewers. Although it was touching to see Anthony crying with his model and his tribute to his mother, and equally sweet to see the usually-assertive Seth Aaron become indecisive; when faced between the choice of his own “vision” of the challenge and to try to please his client. Finding the balance between the two is what makes him so wonderful to watch.

But, once again, we saw little of Ben, Jonathan, Anna and Emilio. Would we really have been worse off; seeing one less amusing remark by Anthony, one less freakout from Janeane, or one less burst of confidence from the doomed Jesus? Maybe the quiet ones might have something interesting to say or to watch. We didn’t get to find out, this week. I hope we get more footage on all the designers, in weeks to come.

Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. I’ve averaged their ratings from my previous scoreboard with this week’s scoreboard, in order to determine their rankings. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
